National Anthem (Short Story)

National Anthem
The most unique feature to a person is their eyes. If no two snowflakes are the same, then no two perceptions of those snowflakes can resemble either. But for the longest time Nemo felt as if nothing matters, living every numb day with apathy. He kept to himself, because there was nobody else worthy of knowing how he felt. The only thing that Nemo looks forward to is the blissful sensation of drowning into his sleep, drifting away from everything. Unfortunately, he could not sleep in class with his badgering peers reciting any thoughts that came to their mind. Their banter was irritatingly loud. He couldn’t hear the alert on the intercom about the scentless gas leak from the laboratory from a defective experiment.

Dreads VS. Locks

On my way to my next class, a girl walked up to me and said, "Excuse me, are these dreads or locks?" Instinctively, I replied that they were locks. She then asked, "Well, what's the difference?" My response: "...there is none." But this is inaccurate on a number of levels.

There is indeed a difference between the terms, but they oppose each other in more than one way. In a broad sense, the main difference is in your preference in names. However your preference will probably be due to the connotation of the terms.

The Progressives were NOT successful in their efforts to reform society

It would be inaccurate and fallacious to believe that there was a successful change that came out of the era of progressivism. Through contrasting beliefs and clashing ways of solving problems, it is difficult for the changes in this society to be effective; rendering it pointless. Although the Progressives tried effortlessly to create change in the country, their tactics were not effectual. The Progressives were narrow-minded, and did not provide a system of productive ways that would provide for equal rights, equal pay, and ways to help the less fortunate. Leaders from this time period such as President Theodore Roosevelt believed it was imperative to take down monopolies and protect our environment, but these goals should not have deteriorated from the American way of life—a chance for opportunities and freedom for all. The Roosevelt administration was somewhat successful in taking down monopolies, but they failed to serve the common man. They also did not take into consideration that not everyone living during the Progressive Era, or even now are in the top 1% of business owners profiting from capitalism. Far more superior changes occurred outside of the era that aimed to take care of specifics in government and the general population in order to improve along with the conflicts’ growth. The underlying issues of what was pushed under the rug for future generations has still not been fully dealt with, and still causes our country to have such dividing issues today.

The VMAs Are The Worst

I'm a fairly optimistic person by nature. Sometime's not by choice, but just a lack of pragmatism on my part. With this being said, I immediately associate myself with the hype of the 2014 Video Music Awards, counting down the days with excitement/enthusiasm. I don't even know what I was expecting. Maybe a sense of inspiration from any particular artist as if it were Palladia or something. But after sitting through it, I felt as if someone had gave me decaffeinated coffee. OUTRAGED

The Person You Know is a Reflection of You

Over the past couple of months I spent so far into the new year, I got to know a lot of people in my life just a little better. At one point, I wondered to myself why I had to meet them in the time span and fashion that I did. Then one night, after fixing myself a cup of Yogi tea, I read the little paper on the end of the tea bag that said, "that person is a reflection of you." That's when it all made sense.

Life Span can be Determined by DNA

In biology class last November, I had to choose an article that was relevant to what we were learning in class and write a topic paper from it. So I went to sciencenews.org and found an article about how DNA could determine how long a person lives. I found it really interesting how a person can be born with the ability to live past the average oldest age, and we were learning about DNA, so it was perfect. Here is an exert of the paper:

"...Genes are responsible for approximately 20-30% of a person’s probability of living to
the age of 85. That percentage, regardless of its minor probability, can still make a difference on
how long you live despite their physical condition. Most of the statistics that establish how long
a person lives is based on their health and lifestyle choices. Studies show that diseases, such as
diabetes (86%), obesity (44%), and high blood pressure (28%), increased a person’s chance of
dying before the age of 90. These are a number of examples of genetic diseases that are known
as multifactorial inheritance disorders."
